Lindsay Australia
Lindsay Australia Limited is an integrated transport, logistics and rural supply company listed on the ASX (Code: LAU). Lindsay Australia works in partnership with Australian farmers at all levels of the supply chain, with the two core divisions comprised of:
- Lindsay Rural – Providing specialised advice and a range of agricultural products including seeds, chemicals, nutrients, fertilisers, irrigation, farm consumables and packaging. Lindsay Rural can utilise the Lindsay Transport refrigerated fleet to deliver rural supplies to farms and transport fresh produce to market via road or rail.
- Lindsay Transport – One of Australia’s largest transport companies, delivering more than 2 million tonnes of freight to over 3,200 customers. Also offers unloading, cross-docking, storage, ripening, fumigation, and import/export services through Lindsay Fresh Logistics.
Customer Requirements
Lindsay Transport operates a hybrid logistics model of road and rail, with Pacific National (PN) providing rail haulage services for more than 350 company-owned refrigerated rail containers. Lindsay Transport’s costs are proportional to the net payload transported by PN; therefore, it was important to minimise the tare weight of the container.
Lindsay Transport’s customers include a number of primary producers, making it important to permit double-stacking of pallets without crushing the produce.

Railbox Solution
Railbox supplied Lindsay Transport with lightweight 46’6” (L) x 9’10” (H) x 2500mm (W) refrigerated intermodal containers, complete with vertical track and deck beams.
Weight reduction was achieved primarily through the use of aluminium external wall & roof sheeting, top and bottom side rails and floor cross-members, however, the specification of Fibre-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) internal lining also offered additional weight reduction and provided an easy-to-clean, food-grade internal surface, which was well-suited to fresh produce. At 6900kg, the tare weight of the container (inclusive of refrigeration plant) is approximately 800kg lighter than a comparable all-steel design.

To permit the double-stacking of pallets, Railbox installed aluminium Vertical Tracks and Deck Beams (VTDB), which are adjustable to suit the height of the lower pallets. The deck beam system also eliminates OH&S issues associated with manual lifting because the deck beams remain captive in the side wall tracks.
